Rain: A World Basics Story
World Basics is a series of simple stories that almost explain how the world works, but not really.
Dedicated to Kurt & all the kids who wonder where rain comes from
A long, long time ago - 4 billion years to be exact - there wasn't much around.
There were rocks - lots and lots of rocks.
There was water around the lots of rocks. There was also a turtle - but it wasn't very nice.
But the rocks were nice. And happy - very, very happy! Until one day, they felt a little thirsty - and realized they didn’t have mouths to drink the water with.
So they gathered all their energy & imagination and focused on the water. It took a while - about 500 million years - but finally, something reached out of the rocks and sipped the water.
This something is what we call a plant. The rocks became softer as the plants gave them more water. The softer the rocks, the more plants that grew. So they grew and grew - and grew.
They drank up the water with their roots, and with their leaves, released almost all of it into the sky - until the air was thick & the ground was dry.
Armies were sent to find more water, and everything they found ended up in the air- until the sky was so full that all of it fell back down. This is what we call rain.
Now every time it rains, remember the plants and the rocks and maybe even the turtle that are drinking almost the same water as the bit in your cup!
